Following the Ditwah cyclone and floods, CCPSL collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, civil society partners and WHO Sri Lanka to plan and implement a phased psychosocial wellbeing programme for affected communities.
Kandy District was prioritised because of the scale of deaths, displacement and disruption. The programme used existing public health field staff, volunteers and first responders to deliver practical psychosocial support across the life course.
A key component was the ‘Puchi Hithata Aadaren – Life for Little Souls’ initiative for children and adolescents. A total of 141 first responders were trained, supported by an activity guide, video guidance and structured activities designed to promote resilience.
The package was later extended through Training of Trainers programmes and received international exposure at the World Forum Foundation global forum on Early Childhood Care and Development 2026.
